Do you know where the names of the days of the week come from? Let's find out!
English is a West Germanic language. The Angles and the Saxons were two groups of Germanic people. They conquered Great Britain many centuries ago. The modern English culture and language comes from them - the Anglo-Saxons, the original English people.
The Germanics had their own gods. To honor them, they used their names to name the days of the week. They also relate to the planets.
Sunday: sun's day, represented by the god Sól or Sunna.
Monday: moon's day, represented by the goddess Máni, Sól's sister.
Tuesday: Tyr's day, the Germanic god of battle.
Wednesday: Woden's day, also knows as Odin, the supreme Germanic god.
Thursday: Thor's day, another famous god. He is the god of thunder, and Odin's son.
Friday has two possibilities: Frigg's day, the Germanic goddess of wisdom, or Freyja's day, the Nordic goddess of love.
Saturday: Saturn's day, the only day with a Roman name, in honor of the god and the planet Saturn.
