Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr is also called the "Festival of Breaking the Fast". It is a religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. It marks the end of Ramadan, a month where Muslims fast everyday between sunrise and sunset. The exact day varies every year, because Muslims use a lunar calendar. Traditionally, Eid al-Fitr begins at sunset on the night of the crescent moon. It is celebrated for one to three days, depending on the country. It is forbidden to fast on the Day of Eid. The date also includes charity. People give money to the poor and the needy.

Eid al-Fitr has a particular prayer. After it is done, Muslims celebrate together in various ways with food. Special meals are prepared, and families eat together.

Eid al-Fitr is a time for celebration. Families travel around to meet their relatives, friends meet, and everyone exchanges gifts. People wear new clothes and also visit the graves of relatives at the cemetery. And what exactly are people celebrating? One of the most difficult and challenging tasks that every Muslim must do: fasting during the month of Ramadan.

The holiday is also called the Sugar Feast - yes, a lot of the food prepared for Eid al-Fitr is sweet! Desserts are a very important part of the celebration.

One of the most common things you’ll hear people say to one another is “Eid Mubarak!” This means “blessed Eid” and is a way of expressing celebration. People also say “Eid sa’id” which means “happy Eid”.

Eid Mubarak!
