The Chernobyl disaster
The Chernobyl disaster was a nuclear accident. It occurred on April 26th, 1986, at the No. 4 reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, near the city of Pripyat in the north of Ukraine. It is considered the worst nuclear disaster in history. It is also one of the only two nuclear energy accidents rated at seven—the maximum severity—on the International Nuclear Event Scale. The other is the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, in Japan.
The emergency response involved 500,000 people and cost an estimated 18 billion Soviet rubles—around US$68 billion. The accident started during a safety test. A large amount of energy was suddenly released. Two explosions destroyed the reactor and also the reactor building. It caused a fire that released radioactive contamination in the air. This contamination reached Belarus, 16 km away, as well as other countries of the USSR and western Europe.
About 49,000 people were evacuated from the area. The exclusion zone was later increased to a 30 kilometers radius, and another 68,000 people were evacuated.
The effects of radiation were very bad. Many people who were working there died a few months later. To reduce the spread of radioactive contamination, the protective Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant sarcophagus was built by December 1986. It was further enclosed in 2017 by the Chernobyl New Safe Confinement.
Today it is possible to visit the area. The levels of radiation are currently very low. But the exclusion zone remains closed - you can only enter it with authorized tour companies. I visited the site in 2018. Here are some of the photos I took there. It is the most impressive place I've ever visited.
