Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory located in the Iberian Peninsula. It has an area of 6.7 square kilometers and is bordered to the north by Spain. The most famous sight of the place is the Rock of Gibraltar. At the foot of the rock is a densely populated town area, home to over 32,000 people.
In 1704, Anglo-Dutch forces captured Gibraltar from Spain. The territory was given to Great Britain under the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713. It has a strategic location, at the entrance and exit of the Mediterranean Sea. Today, half of the world's products transported by sea pass through the strait. Gibraltar's economy is based on tourism, online gambling and financial services.
On 31 January 2020, the UK and Gibraltar left the European Union. In December 2020, the UK and Spain agreed to let Gibraltar stay in the Schengen Agreement.
The official language of Gibraltar is English. Most locals are bilingual, also speaking Spanish. However, other languages are also spoken there: Berber and Arabic are spoken by the Moroccan community, as are Hindi and Sindhi by the Indian community. Maltese is spoken by some families of Maltese descent.
Gibraltarians often speak Llanito, a local language. It is based on Andalusian Spanish with a strong mixture of British English, Maltese, Portuguese, Genovese Italian and Haketia (a Judaeo-Spanish dialect).
Gibraltarian cuisine mixes influences from Andalusian Spaniards, the British, and many foreigners from other places. Profiteroles are considered Gibraltar's national dish. These are served after a meal including calentita, a baked dish made with chickpea flour, water, olive oil, salt and pepper.
