The Isle of Man
The Isle of Man is a British island in the Irish Sea, between Great Britain and Ireland. The people of the island (known as Manx) are a Celtic nation. They have their own language, Manx. English is the main official language.
The Isle of Man is 52 kilometers long and 22 kilometers wide. It has an area of around 572 square kilometers. The island has one famous mountain, Snaefell, with a height of 620 meters. An old saying says that from its summit you can see six kingdoms: Mann, Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales, and Heaven. Some versions add the kingdom of the sea, or Neptune.
For centuries, the island's symbol has been the "three legs of Mann". It appears in the island's official flag, coat of arms, and currency.
The Manx folklore has many mythical creatures:
• the Buggane, a bad spirit;
• the Moddey Dhoo, a ghostly black dog that lives in the Peel Castle.
• fairies, known as "the little folk" or "themselves". There is a famous Fairy Bridge. If you pass on it, you have to wish good morning or good afternoon to the fairies. Otherwise, it's bad luck.
Peel Castle is considered a possible location of King Arthur's Avalon, or the location of the Grail Castle.
The Isle of Man is also known for:
• The Isle of Man TT (Tourist Trophy) motorcycle races;
• The Manx cat, a breed of cat with short tail.
